Sūn Byrd – Laying It Down Since Forever
Format: Vinyl / Stream
Label: Jansen Records
Release date: February 26, 2027
Sūn Byrd began as a group of friends playing soul classics in a hotel lobby. Since then, the Norwegian band has built up more than 350 live performances and earned two Spellemann Award nominations. Their third album draws on American and British soul from the 1960s and 1970s, while bringing funk further into their sound.
Frontman Johan Helland’s distinctive voice is central to the band’s music, supported by driving basslines, keyboards, guitars and a prominent horn section. The combination draws on classic soul traditions while incorporating contemporary influences, with artists such as Leon Bridges, Thee Sacred Souls and Jalen Ngonda cited as musical reference points.
The album includes Is This What Love Is, a song about discovering an unexpected sense of happiness in love, and Don’t Speak of Tomorrow. Both tracks introduce the band’s blend of soulful melodies, tight rhythms and funk influences.
Sūn Byrd have also expanded their live presence beyond Norway, performing at events including SXSW in Austin and New Colossus in New York. With ‘Laying It Down Since Forever’, they continue to develop their own take on soul music.
