For Everlast, born Erik Francis Schrody, life is governed by two simple ideas: what happens is inevitable, and whatever happens, good or bad, will eventually pass. Those ideas run through ‘Embers to Ashes’, his eighth studio album and first release with Martyr Inc Records in partnership with Thirty Tigers and Regime Music Group.
The album follows a turbulent period in the artist’s life. His Los Angeles home was destroyed in the 2018 Woolsey fire, the pandemic followed, he experienced a health event that temporarily prevented him from playing guitar, and he went through a divorce. After regaining the ability to play, Everlast reconnected with Yelawolf, who produced the album. The two eventually travelled to Nashville to record the project, ten years after first discussing the possibility of working together.
The album also features songwriting contributions from David Ray, while Yelawolf’s production played an important role in bringing the project together. Everlast describes the record as a collection shaped by “pain, redemption, and loneliness”, while its closing track, Young Man, turns toward the wisdom he wants to pass on to the next generation.
For an artist whose career has moved between hip-hop, blues and rock for more than three decades, ‘Embers to Ashes’ continues that genre-crossing approach while looking directly at the changes, setbacks and experiences that have shaped his life.
