Some stories remain hidden for generations before finding a voice. For Lauren Braddock, the discovery of a family tragedy dating back to 1908 became the inspiration for Alice Rhodes, a murder ballad rooted in American history and personal remembrance.

While researching her ancestry, Braddock discovered the story of her great-great-aunt Alice Rhodes, who was murdered in Alabama in 1908 by a rejected suitor in an incident that also ended with the killer taking his own life.

The song draws on a three-part historical account titled Death of Alice Rhodes, written by Alice’s younger sister, Minnie Rhodes Grantham. Through this family document, Braddock encountered a story that had remained largely unknown beyond her relatives.

Rather than allowing Alice’s name to disappear into history, Braddock chose to preserve her memory through music. The song combines the storytelling traditions of folk and Americana with the darker atmosphere associated with Southern Gothic narratives.

Based in Nashville, Lauren Braddock is a singer-songwriter and actress, as well as the daughter of Country Music Hall of Fame songwriter Bobby Braddock. She wrote and performs Alice Rhodes, which was produced by Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer Don Henry.

Released shortly before Halloween, the single explores a historical tragedy through the perspective of a family member determined to keep Alice Rhodes’ name and story alive.
