Hubbard’s recording career stretches back to the mid-1970s. His songwriting draws on outlaw country, Americana, country blues and roots rock, often combining detailed storytelling with dry humour and an eye for eccentric characters.
That approach also shapes ‘Reel 2 Reel 4 Real’. The album opens with Cassette Mix Tape, released as its first single on May 29, and continues with titles including ‘A Murder of Crows’, ‘Dog or Wolf’, ‘Gods Playing Poker’ and ‘She Plays ‘Crazy Mama’.
The album title refers to its analogue recording approach. According to Hubbard’s official website, the musicians recorded directly to tape, with the emphasis on the sound and interaction of the band performing together in the studio.
Discussing the record, Hubbard initially joked that it was not simply the best album he had made, but “the best record I’ve ever heard.” More seriously, he expressed his pride in the result and thanked the musicians for the work they contributed.
