Michael Kiwanuka’s new album ‘Fudge’ finds the British singer-songwriter exploring a more spontaneous and instinctive approach to making music. The 12-track collection grew out of a desire to create without worrying about expectations, allowing emotion and experimentation to guide the process.
An important source of inspiration was the late jazz pianist Chick Corea. During the pandemic lockdown, Kiwanuka came across an interview in which Corea encouraged artists to trust their own instincts and pursue what they personally find beautiful.
The album was developed largely through informal recording sessions, with Kiwanuka taking a leading role in the production. He subsequently worked with producer Dom Monks and longtime strings collaborator Rosie Danvers to complete the recordings.
The artwork was created by Stevie Gee, Kiwanuka’s friend and visual collaborator. Its colourful, psychedelic cartoon style reflects the playful character of the project.
Kiwanuka has also disclosed that he suffered a stroke and has spent an extended period recovering. As a result, several US tour dates were cancelled, and his future musical activities remain uncertain.
