I am a fan of the music of Warren Haynes, as I love his brilliant guitar playing and his emotional vocals and so I was really looking forward to this live album called ‘Dreams & Songs’, which features sixteen tracks recorded live in 2019.
The ‘Dreams & Songs’ album explore the various aspects of the 30th year Warren Haynes catalogue, so his solo work, Gov’t Mule, the Allman Brothers band, and The Dead.
This “wonderful” album opens with the title track and right from the start you can hear that this is an unmatched recording.
However, Haynes and band Oteil Burbridge (bass), John Medeski (keys, organ), Jeff Sipe (drums), Greg Osby (sax)) recorded this album with the sixty-four-piece Asheville Symphonic Orchestra and in my humble opinion the orchestration and the horns and saxophone are way too dominant in most of the tracks.
Take for example the amazing song Dreams, which is “spoiled” by the horn section intro and the jazzy too long saxophone solo, or the Grateful Dead song Terrapin Station, which features huge orchestral parts.
Highlights, meaning where Haynes plays some mean guitar solos, are the classic ABB track Whipping Post and the Instrumental Illness.
Banks Of The Deep End is another classic one and a devoted fan favourite and Broken Promised Land features that brilliant Haynes guitar tone.
Another Haynes/Gov’t Mule iconic song is Thorazine Shuffle, however on this album that amazing track is also orchestral “spoiled,” moreover, the drum solo is completely superfluous to me!
The album ends with Dreams & Songs Reprise, so the musical journey becomes full circle.
Haynes is a wonderful performer and brilliant guitarist and lots of people will cherish this live album as a “masterpiece,” but I am truly disappointed as the orchestral “overkill” spoils most of the tracks, furthermore I really could do without the meaningless cover of U2’s One, but then again that is only my opinion.
