More than two decades after their debut, North Carolina’s Chatham County Line continue to explore new musical territory. Their forthcoming twelve-track album ‘Wilder Beauty’ builds on the band’s transition from traditional acoustic bluegrass towards a broader Americana sound, incorporating elements of folk, roots rock and country.
Produced by frontman Dave Wilson, ‘Wilder Beauty’ began during a songwriting retreat in Konnarock, Virginia. The band subsequently returned to Overdub Lane in Durham, North Carolina, where they recorded their self-titled debut in 2003.
Much of the new album was recorded live in the studio, including vocals and instrumental solos. This approach was intended to preserve the natural interaction between musicians who have spent many years performing together.
The current line-up features founding members Dave Wilson (vocals, guitar), John Teer (mandolin, fiddle) and Greg Readling (bass, pedal steel), alongside drummer Darren Jessee. Following the departure of banjo player Chandler Holt in 2019, the band gradually expanded its instrumentation and musical direction, a development already evident on 2024’s ‘Hiyo’.
Longtime collaborators also contribute to the recording. Singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan appears on Breaking Wild Horses, while Phil Cook provides keyboards throughout the album.
The songs explore memory, friendship, changing relationships and the passage of time. The first single, Blackeyed Boy, draws inspiration from Albert Lamorisse’s short film The Red Balloon, which Wilson encountered during his childhood. The song addresses resilience and the experience of learning from personal setbacks.
With ‘Wilder Beauty’, Chatham County Line continue the musical development that has taken them beyond their original bluegrass instrumentation while maintaining their connection to American roots music.
