This album is very personal to us, however: it is not autobiographical”. Waarvan akte.

“So if you’re at home, grab your glass of wine or whiskey
If you’re at a bar, tell the bartender to pour you a couple of longnecks
Get comfortable, y’all, ‘cause we’re gonna take you for a ride now
This is the story of Michael and Tanya”.

Ik ken The War and Treaty sinds hun debuutalbum ‘Healing Tide’ uit 2018.

Their music covers vast stylistic and lyric territory; it embraces Black gospel, soul, country, blues, Americana, R&B, and adult contemporary pop with searing emotional honesty, spiritual sophistication, and hooks. The Story of Michael and Tanya offers fingerpopping truth about their marriage, relationship, personal triumphs, contradictions, and trials in ten songs.”

Beetje uptempo Motown (High Heels), beetje Atlantic (You Can’t Hurt Me Anymore), beetje R&B (Don’t Say Goodbye).

The Story of Michael and Tanya’.

1. The Story of Michael and Tanya

Intro: Whoopi Goldberg
This is the story of a pair nobody understood in the beginning
But completely got in the end
It’s a story of heartache and redemption, peace and war, loss and gain, trial and triumph, lies and truth, love and lust, death and rebirth, sin and salvation
Maybe you’ve heard a little bit about their tale before
But now, they’re telling it all, withholding nothing
A soldier and his woman, roughing it through life’s trails

Verse 1: Tanya Trotter
Thinking of a time when life was much simpler
You was doing you, when I was doing me, and we was doing each other
In the best way every minute of the day, making a believer that
Love feels better than pain

Verse 2: Tanya Trotter
Fifteen years in, purity and sin, we’ve been getting litty
Drunk in love from each other’s cup, we been getting tipsy
You’re my wine and I’m your gin, let’s keep gettin’ busy
Who said we have to slow down?

Chorus: Michael Trotter Jr. & Tanya Trotter
Foot on the gas, no breaks
This is what keeps heartaches away
Can’t feel my face, I’m a little giddy
Roll me up, smoke me up
Baby, let’s get litty
Baby, let’s get litty
Baby, let’s get litty
Baby, let’s get, let’s get, let’s get, let’s get litty

Bridge: Michael Trotter Jr. & Tanya Trotter
You and me somehow make three
Can’t you see we’re eternally, oh
Together, you and I together till we die
Oh, you baby
Oh, you’ll never walk alone
Never leave you on your own
Oh, baby, you and me
Oh, baby, yeah
You and me
Oh, baby we’ll shine forever, baby

Outro: Whoopi Goldberg
So if you’re at home, grab your glass of wine or whiskey
If you’re at a bar, tell the bartender to pour you a couple of longnecks
Get comfortable, y’all, ‘cause we’re gonna take you for a ride now
This is the story of Michael and Tanya

2. Don’t Say Goodbye

Verse 1: Tanya Trotter, Michael Trotter Jr.
I don’t want another one night stand
I know what you want is a man with a slow hand
Ooh, and I don’t need a temporary connection
But what I need is a permanent situation

Chorus
Don’t say goodbye, don’t say farewell
Don’t say so long without a kiss
Telling me you’re coming back
Don’t say goodbye, don’t say goodnight
Don’t say so long without a kiss
Telling me you’re coming back
Ooh, please come back to me, darling

Verse 2
I don’t want another moment in time
Mmm, I lay down in your bed, but you won’t wake up in mine
Ooh, I don’t need a poor explanation
Ooh, but what I need is a permanent situation (Ah-ah)

Chorus
Don’t say goodbye, don’t say farewell
Don’t say so long without a kiss
Telling me you’re coming back
Don’t say goodbye, don’t say goodnight
Don’t say so long without a kiss
Telling me you’re coming back
Ooh, please come back to me, darling (Darling)

Bridge
And don’t wanna be alone tonight
Don’t wanna be alone tonight
Don’t wanna be alone tonight
Don’t wanna be alone tonight
Don’t wanna be alone tonight
Don’t wanna be alone tonight
(Ooh) Don’t say goodbye, babe
Don’t say goodbye, babe
Don’t say goodbye, babe
(Ooh) Don’t say goodbye, babe
Don’t say goodbye, babe
Don’t say goodbye, babe

Outro
Please come back to me, darling
Oh, yeah
Please come back to me, darling
Oh, yeah

3. You Can’t Hurt Me Anymore

Verse 1: Tanya Trotter
I opened my heart just like a fool
You walked right in, pulled up a stool
We did the dance, you broke my heart
I bet you’re feeling real big now tearing me apart

Pre-Chorus
There in the dark down on my knees
You lit the wrong kind of fire in me

Chorus
You can’t hurt me anymore
You can lay down your soul
Your words don’t cut me like they used to, baby (Baby)
‘Cause I shook back all my pride
I got Jesus on my side
And an army full of angels at my door
You can’t hurt me anymore

Verse 2: Michael Trotter Jr.
You got some nerve to be actin’ all hurt
When you know you’re the one who started this first
What good is a dance if you’re standing still
You said you’d change, but you never will

Chorus
You can’t hurt me anymore
You can lay down your soul
Your words don’t cut me like they used to, baby
Oh, hey, boy, I took back all my pride
I got Jesus on my side
And an army full of angels at my door
You can’t hurt me anymore

Pre-Chorus
There in the dark, yeah, down on my knees
You lit the wrong kind of fire in me

Final Chorus
You can’t hurt me anymore
You can lay down your soul
‘Cause I got an army full of angels at my door
Yeah, even if you walk back through that door
You can’t hurt me anymore

4. Shouldn’t Have

Verse 1: Michael Trotter Jr.
Shouldn’t have been gone that long, baby
I shouldn’t have stayed out, stayed out that late
Shouldn’t have been gone that long, baby
I shouldn’t have took that dinner date, oh my my
You expected more from me
You let me be in her company

Pre-Chorus
How could I be so wrong?

Chorus
I crossed the line, I did it this time
How could I lose control?
And I was wrong, I knew all along
How could I hurt you so?
Oh, I messed up so bad
I made you mad
Baby, I want you to know
Should it ever happen again
Baby, you gotta let me go
Oh-ooh

Post-Chorus
Ah, you just gotta let me go, baby
Ah-oh

Verse 2: Tanya Trotter
Shouldn’t have been gone that long, baby
I thought you were a better man
Shouldn’t have been gone that long, baby
Getting hurt this way, oh no, it wasn’t the plan
You should’ve had more respect for me
In your heart, you see
How can I forgive you now?

Chorus
You crossed the line, you did it this time
Baby, you lose control
You were wrong, I knew it all along
How could you, how could you hurt me so?
Oh, you messed up so bad
I’m so damn mad
Baby, I want you to know
If it ever happens again, oh
I gotta let me go, ooh-ooh

Outro
Let you go
I was wrong
You know
Baby, I messed up so bad when I hurt you
So bad
Yes, I’m so bad
No, baby, won’t you take me back?
Oh, no
Yeah, I was wrong
Yeah, oh
Yeah, ooh
Should I mess up bad?

5. Darlene and Gene

Verse 1: Tanya Trotter
I finished my lunch early, had a lot of time to blow
Started thinking about surprising you
At your job, wearing nothing under my raincoat
I could only imagine what you’d do

Pre-Chorus
And when I walked through the door
What did I see?
Skanky, old Darlene with her hands all over Gene

Chorus
Oh, Lord, she done got the better half of me
I shot her in the boom-boom, and I shot Gene in his knees
She’s bleeding out, and he’s running now
Calling the police
I’ll gladly go to jail for shooting Darlene and Gene

Verse 2
She used to be my best friend, joined at the hip
We spent so much time together
We started dressing, smelling, even talking alike
Momma, I sure should’ve known better

Pre-Chorus
And when I walked through the door
What did I see?
Skanky, old Darlene with her hands all over Gene

Chorus
Oh, Lord, she done got the better half of me
I shot her in the boom-boom, and I shot Gene in his knees
She’s bleeding out, and he’s running now
Calling the police
I’ll gladly go to jail for shooting Darlene and Gene
Oh, yeah

6. Reclaim All Of Your Time

Verse 1: Tanya Trotter
When a girl can’t get her man
To do the simple things she needs
And he ain’t got no plan
To ever treat her like a queen
She finds herself crying more tears
Than a newborn who needs fed
Better leave him now while there’s still time
To get over regret

Chorus
Let that headache go, get rid of the drama
Send that baby back home to his mama
Get yourself a glass of wine
And reclaim all of your time

Verse 2: Valerie June
If you’re sittin’ there on your back porch
Sippin’ on sweet tea
You hear him in the background on the telephone
Whisperin’ to some other sweet pea
Don’t you get mad, cryin’ to your mama
All she’ll tell you to do is pray
Why don’t you go tell your papa?
He’ll put that sucker away

Chorus: Tanya Trotter & Valerie June
Let that headache go, get rid of the drama
Send that baby back home to his mama
Get yourself a glass of wine
And reclaim all of your time

Verse 3: Wynonna
Well, when he sleeps with no cares and worries
Snorin’ like the hogs in the pen
Get dressed in a hurry
Pack a bag or two and get in
That nice old fancy car
But don’t you forget this one thing
Get his wallet and his credit card
Find a pawn shop and pawn off that ring
Pawn that ring off, baby

Chorus
Let that headache go, get rid of the drama
Send that baby back home to his mama
Get yourself a glass of wine
And reclaim all of your time
Let that headache go, get rid of the drama
Send that baby back home to his mama
Get yourself a glass of wine
And reclaim all of your time

7. Lay This Bottle Down

Verse 1: Michael Trotter Jr.
This whiskey river is runnin’ real slow
I’m all dried up with no place to go
I see my face in the bottle’s glare
Haunted by memories just hangin’ there

Chorus
Gotta lay this bottle down
Find a way to turn my life around
Get my feet on solid ground
Gotta lay this bottle down

Verse 2
Each pour’s a promise with each sip I try
I tell myself it’s the last time
But the pain, it calls, and I give in
Trapped in a battle, and I can’t seem to win

Chorus
Gotta lay this bottle down
Find a way to turn my life around
Get my feet on solid ground
Gotta lay this bottle down

Instrumental Break

Bridge
I’ve searched for the strength
To fight the good fight
To walk the walk
In the beautiful light
This weight is heavy
And I’ve had enough
Faith keeps me going
But life’s still tough

Chorus
Gotta lay this bottle down
Find a way to turn my life around
Get my feet on solid ground
Gotta lay this bottle down
Get my feet on solid ground
Gotta lay this bottle down

8. Don’t Give Up Now

Verse 1: Michael Trotter Jr.
Lately, you’ve been in pain
Can’t see the sun for the rain
You been barely holding on for dear life
Right now, you need relief for the strife

Chorus
But please don’t give up now, we need you
Please don’t give up now, we love you
Please don’t give up now, we need you
Please don’t give up now, we love you
We love you

Verse 2: Michael Trotter Jr. & Tanya Trotter
I know you need some peace
Trying to stand, but you’re weak
Everybody’s turn their back on you, you need family
Trade all your sorrows for peace

Chorus
But please don’t give up now, we need you
Please don’t give up now, we love you
Please don’t give up now, we need you
Please don’t give up now, we love you

Bridge
I’d give anything (I’d give anything)
I’d give anything to set you free
You mean everything, and I mean everything to me

Please don’t give up now, we need you
Please don’t give up now, we love you
Please don’t give up now
Don’t give up now

Girl, I ain’t no preacher
I just want to reach you in a hurry

Being a saint, ain’t required
