Ben Vaughn’s new album Magnetic East: The Deer Tick Sessions sees the veteran singer-songwriter team up with Americana rockers Deer Tick for an unconventional musical experiment. Vaughn, known for his adventurous approach to recording, stepped away from his guitar and allowed the band to completely reinterpret his songs.
Recorded at Deer Tick frontman John McCauley’s home studio in Rhode Island, the album was produced by the band alongside Vaughn, with drummer Dennis Ryan engineering. GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton also appears on two tracks.
The ten-track collection blends Americana, rock, pop and psychedelic influences. Highlights include the driving rocker ‘Danish Modern’ and ‘When Love Returns’, originally conceived by Vaughn as an Engelbert Humperdinck-style ballad before Deer Tick transformed it with a powerful guitar arrangement.
By deliberately surrendering creative control, Vaughn allowed the band to take his songs in unexpected directions. The result is an adventurous and genre-bending collaboration that adds a fresh chapter to his more than 40-year career.
