KAREN DAHLSTROM is a songwriter whose incisive, unflinching lyrics cut straight to the heart. Raised singing in show choirs and jazz ensembles, she spent her early years emulating the likes of Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald — until she realized her voice was better suited to storytelling than technical perfection. In her thirties, Dahlstrom discovered the power of simplicity in music, drawn to artists like Townes Van Zandt, Gillian Welch and the Appalachian folk tradition. Picking up the guitar, she immersed herself in Brooklyn’s old-time and bluegrass sessions, later joining the Americana band Bobtown, which released four critically acclaimed albums.
Dahlstrom began recording solo work in 2011, exploring her Idaho roots and mining family lore for songs that resonate with plainspoken honesty. Her EPs Gem State (2011) and No Man’s Land (2019) led to recognition at Folk Alliance and the Kerrville Folk Festival, and her upcoming debut album, Love These Days (2026), blends lived-in wisdom with generous vulnerability. Collaborators and audiences have been drawn to her storytelling, which ranges from reflections on loss and regret to tender, existential reckonings.
Dahlstrom creates music with a focus on truth over polish, crafting songs that illuminate both personal and universal struggles. Guided by a lifetime of musical discovery — from jazz roots to High Lonesome country — her work is a testament to resilience, honesty and the quiet power of song.
