Soms zijn twee woorden genoeg om de lading (bijna) te dekken. Het album “Done Street Blues” van Half Deaf Clatch is een schoolvoorbeeld van die waardevolle eigenschap: bij dit album gaat het om de woorden ‘integer’ en ‘authentiek’. Dat was ook al het geval bij het eerste album van zijn hand dat ik tegenkwam: ‘Feels Like Home‘ (2023).
Uit een zoektocht naar informatie blijkt Half Deaf Clatch (aka Andrew McLatchie) een enorme staat van dienst te hebben. Veel, heel veel optredens, met gepassioneerde blues. Vaak in z’n eentje, maar altijd bevlogen en intens. Zo’n artiest waar je niet om heen kunt, of je het leuk vindt of niet. Naast al dat optreden heeft hij een gigantische hoeveel albums en EP’s gemaakt. Op zijn website tel ik er vele tientallen. Voor de duidelijkheid: lang niet al die albums staan op Spotify. Meestal is de muziek down-to-earth, Clatch in z’n akoestische eentje. Om te laten horen waar zijn muzikale roots liggen, heeft hij in de loop der jaren ook tribute-albums gemaakt met de muziek van oude blues-grootheden als Mississippi Fred McDowell, Skip James, Bukka White, Charley Patton en Son House. Kortom: hij kent zijn klassiekers.
Zijn muziek is verhalend en bedrieglijk eenvoudig. Maar de intensiteit en oprechtheid spatten er altijd van af. Vijf september 2025 verscheen ‘Doon Street Blues’, een EP met drie nummers. Ik ben zo vrij de omschrijving van het album, zoals die te vinden is bij het sublieme distributiekanaal Bandcamp, over te nemen.
“This month’s release is EXTRA special, as it’s a collaboration between myself, and my good friend and author Richard Wall.
When I played at Upton Blues Festival in July I spent a very enjoyable 24 hours in the company of Richard, and we talked, a lot. A week or so after the festival Richard sent me a rough draft of a short story, inspired by an anecdote I had told him, about an experience I’d had after playing a show a few years before.
Richard had turned my mundane tale into something wonderfully supernatural, and I loved it. We decided I’d write some songs to go with it, and Richard finished the story. One month later, and here it is in all its glory – ‘Doon Street Blues’.
Thirty minutes of Bluesy, Gothic Americana played on acoustic guitar, with gravelly vocals, cello and some other string type things.

‘Doon Street Blues’ is het verhaal over wat Half Deaf Clatch meemaakt na een van zijn vele optredens, als hij -op zoek naar wat te eten- een café vindt in een hem onbekende straat: Doon Street. Of denkt hij dat alleen maar? Boeiend is het wél. Hij slaat de onbekende (niet bestaande?) steeg in, komt in een hem onbekende kroeg terecht, krijgt een hapje te eten en een drankje. De band die er speelt vraagt hem mee te doen en dan gaat het verhaal helemaal los. Hij weet niet hoe lang hij speelt, hij weet niet hoeveel toegiften er geweest zijn, maar de avond is magisch. Als hij vertrekt lost het tafereel op in het duister…
De tekst heeft wat betreft de opbouw en inhoud Dylanesque trekjes. In Dylan’s Shelter From The Storm (‘Blood On The Tracks’; 1975) hoor je een dame tegen iemand die in slecht weer verkeert, zeggen: “Come in, she said, I’ll give you shelter from the storm”.
12-Bar Blues
Het verhaal van Richard Wall beslaat zo’n vijf pagina’s en staat in zijn boek 12-Bar Blues.
