Single I Gwyn Ashton & Friends – Mississippi Moonshine Mama
“Mississippi Moonshine Mama” tells the story of a factory worker who doesn’t care too much for the regular radio that always blasts out the hit songs at work and one day he gets in his car to go home and accidentally tunes his radio into Irene’s show. Discovering a wealth of music, Irene Barrett’s Drivin’ Home With The Blues has now become a ritual for him to listen to every time she’s on air.
A personal friend of Ashton’s, Irene was going through a tough time and gave up her show temporarily, so Ashton wrote this song as a gesture to encourage her to keep it going, that people regard her, along with all community radio presenters, as someone that is important and appreciated in the industry.
With help from friends Kevin Borich (guitar), Rod Mayall (Blues Breakers – organ), David Blight (Cold Chisel – harmonica), Rob Vorel (piano), Harry Brus (Renee Geyer, Marcia Hines – bass) and Paul Wheeler (Icehouse, Machinations – drums) Ashton has written and recorded a song for Australian public radio presenter Irene Barrett to show appreciation for what she, along with all other community radio presenters worldwide, contributes to helping non-mainstream artists everywhere.
With regular radio basically dropping the ball on creative artists, musicians rely on the volunteers who put time, effort and money into helping promote talent on a global level and we wouldn’t be here without their integrity, love, passion and devotion for helping to keep music alive.
