Datura4, named after a poisonous flower, release their sixth album called ‘High On The Low Brow’. The music that Datura4, from Down Under, produces, is a mix of blues rock, boogie, garage rock and stoner rock, resulting in raw, riff-driven hard rock music, reminding me of bands like ZZ Top, Thin Lizzy and even Led Zeppelin sometimes.
Datura4 is definitely Dom Mariani’s band, as he is the founder and frontman of this heavy psychedelic band. ‘High On The Low Brow’ features nine new tracks and the album kicks off with Under A Rock, which features a melodic groovy shuffle and is therefore the ideal opening song indeed.
Follow up Another Fool’s Gate stands out due to the Jon Lord-styled heavy organ sound, while the longest track of the album, Double Dealer is bluesier and brings back memories of Jack White. Bugs is a 100% hard rocking track, while Dirty Laundry has some Tom Petty characteristics. Mind Sailor, one of my favourite ones on this album has a great chorus that even reminds me of Crowded House.
So, lots of variety on Datura4’s 6th studio album, but every song rocks and the guitar playing and singing of Mariani is top notch indeed.
Play it LOUD, of course and enjoy!
