Steve Cropper & The Midnight Hour have released the soulful ballad My Angels Are Calling, featuring Queen guitarist Brian May on lead vocals and ZZ Top’s Billy F Gibbons on guitar.
May wrote the lyrics and co-wrote the music with Steve Cropper, Roger C. Reale and producer Jon Tiven. He sings from Cropper’s perspective, looking back on his life and musical journey.
Following Cropper’s death in December 2025, the song developed into a personal tribute to the influential guitarist and songwriter.
The recording opens with the sound of waves, creating a direct connection with Sittin’OnSittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay, the Otis Redding classic co-written by Cropper.
Towards the end of the track, May introduces Billy F Gibbons, who closes the song with a guitar solo.
My Angels Are Calling appears on the posthumous Steve Cropper & The Midnight Hour album ‘Watching The Tide’. The album also features guest appearances from Eric Clapton and Ronnie Wood.
