After years of earning a reputation as one of Houston’s most versatile guitarists, Kelly Doyle is stepping into the spotlight with his debut solo album, Thieves. The nine-track instrumental record will be released on August 14, 2026, via Strolling Bones Records.
Doyle has spent years performing and recording alongside artists such as Robert Ellis, Khruangbin, Phosphorescent, and What Made Milwaukee Famous. European audiences, including many in the Netherlands, will remember his outstanding performances as Robert Ellis‘ second guitarist, where his tasteful playing and effortless blend of jazz, country, blues and Americana consistently stood out.
Following years of touring and recording, Doyle temporarily stepped away from the guitar to explore ambient and electronic music. During that period, he created several experimental recordings built around synthesizers, computers and atmospheric soundscapes.
With Thieves, he returns to the instrument that first established his reputation. The album is rooted in jazz but freely incorporates elements of Americana, Country and Ambient music, resulting in a collection of instrumental compositions driven by melody and atmosphere.
Speaking about the record, Doyle explains: “I really don’t think of it as jazz at all. I know it’s a necessary descriptor that you have to use. But I think of it as just part of a trajectory of the things I dig.”
Produced and mixed by Steve Christensen (Khruangbin, Steve Earle), Thieves features Doyle alongside Will Story (bass), Jeremy Bruch (drums) and Nelson Devereaux (saxophone). The album was recorded in Doyle’s hometown of Houston, Texas.
The interaction between guitar and saxophone plays an important role throughout the album, while the nine concise compositions place melody and musical expression ahead of technical showmanship.
