The collaboration brings together two guitarists whose musical paths have been closely connected since the 1970s, when a teenage Steve Vai began taking guitar lessons from Satriani on Long Island. Their friendship continued through their individual careers and numerous G3 appearances before they joined forces for the SatchVai project.
The album grew out of the G3 reunion tour and initially began with the idea of recording a single track. That project expanded when Satriani sent Vai two pieces that became ‘The Sea of Emotion’, Part 1 and Part 2. The resulting album features ten tracks, including the three-part The Sea of Emotion suite.
The record also features contributions from producer and keyboardist Eric Caudieux, while a group of longtime collaborators provide bass and drums. Glenn Hughes appears as guest vocalist on I Wanna Play My Guitar.
The album is preceded by the new single Mayhem, released alongside the album announcement.
