Louisiana-born singer-songwriter CJ Solar introduces a new chapter in his recording career with ‘Black Label Blues’, the debut album from CJ Solar & The Old Souls. Released on November 6, 2026, the eleven-track record draws on Southern rock, Delta blues, traditional country storytelling and the swampy musical heritage of Solar’s home state.
Solar has spent much of the past decade establishing himself as a Nashville songwriter, contributing to hits including Morgan Wallen’s Up Down and Jameson Rodgers’ Some Girls. With The Old Souls, he turns his attention to the guitar-driven music that shaped his early years, citing Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Allman Brothers Band and Bob Seger among his influences.
Produced by Nick Gibbens, Solar’s longtime drummer, ‘Black Label Blues’ was recorded with an emphasis on live musicianship rather than extensive studio processing. According to the accompanying press material, the sessions took place without click tracks or Auto-Tune.
The project brings together an experienced group of musicians, including former Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman, guitarists JD Simo and Jared James Nichols, bassist Steve Mackey, keyboardist Billy Justineau and longtime collaborator Rick Huckaby. Songwriter Jeffrey Steele also appears on Done Did It.
The title track, Black Label Blues, introduces the album’s Southern rock and blues influences, while previously released songs including Dizzy, First Time Caller and Can’t Put You Down reflect the project’s connections to country and roots music.
For Solar, the name The Old Souls acknowledges both his longstanding musical relationships and his appreciation for the classic bands that inspired him. The album also marks a renewed focus on performing original material with a full band.
