Brooklyn-based alternative rock band DIIV return with ‘ZIRP!’, the follow-up to 2024’s ‘Frog In Boiling Water’. Produced by British musician and producer A. G. Cook, the eleven-track album brings the band’s shoegaze and grunge influences into closer contact with more direct pop songwriting.

Since their 2012 debut ‘Oshin’, DIIV have developed a sound built around layered guitars, atmospheric textures and melodic songwriting.

Their 2019 album ‘Deceiver’ introduced a heavier grunge influence, while ‘Frog In Boiling Water’ continued to explore the more abrasive side of their music.

For ‘ZIRP!’, DIIV worked with A. G. Cook, known for his collaborations with Charli XCX and Caroline Polachek. Despite his background in experimental electronic pop, Cook approached the recordings with particular attention to the band’s live sound.

Rather than extensively reconstructing the original demos through electronic production, he concentrated on live drums, detailed guitar arrangements and the interaction between the musicians.

The resulting approach was intended to preserve DIIV’s guitar-driven identity while allowing more room for concise melodies and conventional pop structures.

The album also continues the band’s interest in contemporary social and economic issues. Its title refers to zero interest rate policies, while the lyrics address subjects including technology, consumer culture and the influence of streaming platforms on the music industry.

Lead single The Fountain introduces the album’s combination of expansive guitar textures and a more pronounced rhythmic approach. Elsewhere, Trillions and Kid reflect the band’s intention to experiment with more accessible songwriting without abandoning their alternative rock foundations.

The album closes with Idiot In The Sky, a composition completed during the later stages of the recording process.

With ‘ZIRP!’, DIIV continue to develop the relationship between their underground guitar influences and an increasingly melodic approach. The album marks another stage in the evolution of a band that has moved between shoegaze, grunge and indie rock throughout its career.
