With ‘Chicago Cowboy’, Jamiah Rogers demonstrates that Chicago blues is still very much alive and evolving. The guitarist and singer from Chicago’s South Side combines powerful electric blues with funk, soul and rock on his Delmark Records debut. The result is an energetic album where tradition and innovation go hand in hand.
Rogers is a guitarist who enjoys pushing musical boundaries. His fiery, sometimes lightning-fast solos alternate with more subtle playing, while his raw, expressive vocals perfectly complement the character of the music. Together with bassist Isaiah ‘Zay’ Horne and drummer Tyvon ‘Tank’ Rice, he forms a tight trio whose strength lies in its direct, unpolished approach.
Opening track Mojo Man immediately sets the tone, while On And On brings a healthy dose of funk into the mix. On Let Me Live, Rogers introduces a surprising reggae-influenced rhythm, showing that his musical outlook extends well beyond traditional Chicago blues. The title track, Chicago Cowboy, is another highlight, driven by powerful guitar work and a solid groove. His interpretation of Buddy Guy’s Leave My Girl Alone provides a clear connection to the blues tradition from which Rogers emerged.
The production maintains a raw, lively sound without unnecessary polish. It suits the music well, although the prominent guitar playing can occasionally become a little overpowering. Guest appearances by bassist Larry Williams and vocalist Amyna Pearson add further variety.
With twelve tracks, including ten original compositions, Jamiah Rogers delivers an impressive statement. ‘Chicago Cowboy’ is a passionate and versatile blues album, firmly rooted in Chicago while leaving plenty of room for fresh influences. Rogers proves that respecting tradition does not mean standing still.
