Irish alternative rock band Fontaines D.C. return with ‘Dopamine Chamber’, the follow-up to their platinum-certified 2024 album ‘Romance’. Produced by James Ford, the eleven-track record marks another stage in the Dublin band’s continuing musical development.

While their earlier albums were firmly rooted in guitar-driven post-punk, the new material introduces a broader electronic palette.

Synthesizers, programmed percussion, samples and orchestral strings influenced by 1960s Italian pop play an increasingly prominent role. On several tracks, guitars are absent altogether.

The album was recorded with Ford across sessions in London, the English countryside and Palermo, with the band exploring arrangements that move beyond the familiar sound of their earlier recordings.

Introduced by the single Marianne, ‘Dopamine Chamber’ examines the relationship between pleasure, escapism and anxiety in contemporary society.

Artificial intelligence, environmental concerns, political violence and the constant presence of online information all form part of the album’s thematic background.

Frontman Grian Chatten describes the album as a musical environment in which different sounds and arrangements can influence the listener’s state of mind.

Another notable inclusion is Where Is Gone?, featuring Spanish singer ROSALÍA, whose appearance adds an international collaboration to the album’s eleven compositions.

From ‘Dogrel’ and ‘A Hero’s Death’ through ‘Skinty Fia’ and ‘Romance’, Fontaines D.C. have consistently developed their musical identity. Their latest release continues that progression, placing greater emphasis on electronic textures and cinematic arrangements.

Fontaines D.C. have also been a personal favourite at Bluestown Music for several years, particularly since seeing the band perform live at Doornroosje in Nijmegen on April 4, 2022.

With ‘Dopamine Chamber’, the band presents another chapter in its evolving catalogue, moving further beyond the post-punk foundations of its early recordings.
