More than three decades after the release of Relish, American singer-songwriter Joan Osborne returns to the album with a new musical approach. For this anniversary project, she has reworked its songs through the lens of jazz, collaborating with bassist and producer Christian McBride and an ensemble of acclaimed musicians.
The idea followed Osborne’s visit to the Newport Jazz Festival in 2024, where she met McBride, then nearing the end of his decade-long tenure as the festival’s artistic director. A longtime admirer of Osborne’s music, he agreed to help transform the original material into new arrangements.
The ensemble includes guitarist Marc Ribot, drummer Nate Smith, pianist Caelan Cardello, pianist Renee Rosnes, drummer Jerome Jennings and saxophonist Donny McCaslin. Osborne and McBride developed the arrangements before bringing the musicians together in the studio, where the songs evolved through their individual contributions.
The project also revisits Osborne’s connection with Bob Dylan. Her original version of his song Man in the Long Black Coat helped bring her to Dylan’s attention and eventually led to a studio duet between the two artists. A newly arranged version of the song is available now as the album’s first single.
With ‘Relish Reimagined’, Osborne brings three decades of experience and a fresh jazz perspective to the songs that helped establish her career.
