The Star Room Boys emerged from Athens, Georgia, in the 1990s, with frontman and songwriter Dave Marr at the center of a band that combined hard country, cosmic Americana and stories of heartbreak, drinking and everyday life. Their debut, ‘Why Do Lonely Men and Women Want to Break Each Other’s Hearts?’, was originally released in 1999 on Checkered Past Records.
The album was recorded largely live at David Barbe’s Chase Park Transduction studio, with the band’s lineup featuring Marr, Philip McArdle, John Neff, John McMahon and Bob Fernandez. The combination of country twang, pedal steel and spacious reverb became a defining part of the Star Room Boys’ sound.

The reissue gives the album a new physical life. Released by Strolling Bones Records on September 25, 2026, it is available on CD and, for the first time, as a double LP. The band’s second album, ‘This World Just Won’t Leave You Alone’, is also set to be reissued by the label.
Among the album’s thirteen tracks are Gastonia, Both Our Towns, Souvenir, New York City Isn’t Going Anywhere and the title track. The Star Room Boys will also reunite for shows in Athens and Atlanta in 2026.
