Joy Oladokun returns with her new album ‘Hope Is A Heavy Thing’. The album marks a new chapter for the Nashville-based singer-songwriter, who produced the project with additional contributions from Nigerian producer Spellz. Oladokun explores themes of identity, belonging and self-discovery, while drawing on a broad range of musical influences.
Among the album’s twelve tracks are the previously released songs Kind and Zombie, alongside Sage, a collaboration with Nigerian artist Adekunle Gold. According to Oladokun, the album looks back at the past as a way of understanding the future.
Recorded in Nashville, New York and while on tour, ‘Hope Is A Heavy Thing’ brings together elements inspired by soul, folk, Afrobeat, hip-hop and rock. The album follows ‘In defense of my own happiness’ (2021), ‘Proof of Life’ (2023) and ‘Observations From A Crowded Room’ (2024).
