After a long and transformative break from music — filled with study, the writing of a history book, and building a new life in rural France — ‘Weather The Storm’ marks a powerful return for Australian singer-songwriter Marisa Yeaman
The album’s journey was not a straight line; its creation was delayed by the global pandemic, its conception shaped by a period of deep reflection. But when the moment finally came, the music came alive in a joyful, nine-day recording session at Studio Wild Verband in the Netherlands — a reunion of longtime collaborators and friends.
Marisa took her place at the heart of the record, performing all vocals and acoustic guitar, her songwriting deeply rooted in lived experience. At her side was producer and multi-instrumentalist BJ Baartmans, a trusted creative partner whose musical contributions brought a stunning range of texture and emotion to the project. BJ’s guitar work is a prominent feature, but he also added dobro, mandolin, baritone guitar, bouzouki, harmonica, and even electric sitar, alongside his tasteful harmony vocals. The pair’s creative synergy had been proven years earlier when they collaborated on “Aurora,” a song Marisa was commissioned to write and record for a 2012 project with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. BJ sometimes played sideman for Marisa in The Netherlands — so this album felt like the long overdue deep dive they’d always hoped to make.
The ensemble behind ‘Weather The Storm’ was a handpicked dream team. Sjoerd Van Bommel’s artful drumming and percussion provided the album’s rhythmic soul, while Tom Baartmans (BJ’s son) brought rich, grounded warmth on bass guitar. Rob Geboers lent his masterful touch to the piano, Hammond B3 and keyboards, most movingly on “Innocent Beauty,” where his vintage-style piano playing perfectly captured the 1940s era the song evokes. One of the most poignant moments came on “Vermeer’s Clouds,” when cellist Marie-José Sonneveld-Didderen arrived with her 18th-century cello and delivered the vital part Marisa had been hearing in her head since writing— a moment of musical alchemy that completed the song’s story.
The recording process, engineered by BJ Baartmans, relied on mostly live performances, giving the album a warmth and authenticity that mirrors the humanity at its core. Just as the songs explore compassion, resilience, and the quiet moments of truth in a divided world, the performances feel intimate, immediate — full of life rather than polish.
With ‘Weather The Storm,’ Marisa Yeaman emerges renewed, grounded, and more herself than ever — offering songs that are both deeply personal and universally resonant. It is not just a return, but a reaffirmation of music as a language of meaning, honesty, and enduring connection.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
Australian singer-songwriter Marisa Yeaman has always walked a path guided by a Pure Motive—the title of her debut album and a fitting compass for her creative life. A true troubadour, Marisa’s music is rooted in lived experience, poetic reflection, and a deep reverence for the human condition. Her songs span the emotional and sonic terrain between folk, Americana, blues and jazz, resisting categorisation while remaining unmistakably her own.
Born of wide horizons, her early years were spent criss-crossing the Australian outback with her family, absorbing the stories of the land and its people. That childhood instilled in her a rare lens for observation and empathy—qualities that continue to shape her songwriting. Over the past two decades, Marisa has carved a distinctive niche on stages and airwaves across Europe, the UK, the USA, and Australia, earning international recognition and a loyal audience.
With a voice that can hold a room in stillness, and songs that carry both vulnerability and grit, she has shared stages with the likes of Tom Russell, Chris Smither. Marisa has released three critically acclaimed albums, all of which climbed the European Americana Charts. ‘Pure Motive’ (2006) and ‘Roadmap Heart’ (2008) established her as a compelling new voice, while ‘Voices From The Underground’ (2012) confirmed her place among the genre’s finest, reaching No. 4 on the Euro Americana Chart. That same year, she was invited to write and record a song for the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam—as was also part of another project with the Groninger Museum.
After stepping away from touring, Marisa took time to complete a Diploma and publish her first book in 2019. She later relocated to France with her husband. But music remained a constant calling. Now based on a small lavender farm in a tiny French village, Marisa returns with ‘Weather The Storm’ (2025), her long-awaited fourth studio album. Produced by longtime collaborator BJ Baartmans in the Netherlands, the record is both a comeback and a statement: a collection of songs about resilience, grace, and what it means to remain human in an increasingly fractured world.
Equal parts songwriter, visual artist, and storyteller, Marisa Yeaman’s work is driven by authenticity and lyrical depth. Whether performing solo with her guitar or backed by a full band, her presence is quiet fire—intimate, honest, and unforgettable.
