Bloedstollende beklemming
Luther Black (eigen naam: Rick Wagner) stuurde mij zijn meest recente release door: Black and Blue. Na overleg met de hoofdredacteur van de site kreeg ik het groene licht voor een review, hoewel het eigenlijk ‘maar’ een single was. Ik vroeg Luther/Rick of de single de voorbode was van een nieuw album. Dat was niet het geval, ik beluisterde de single een paar keer en dacht: “Mooi nummer”. Maar ik greep niet onmiddellijk mijn pen om er een stukje over te schrijven. Dat onmiddellijk in de pen klimmen deed ik wél, toen ik Black and Blue een paar keer beter (over de koptelefoon) beluisterd had.
Black and Blue blijkt dan niet alleen een langzaam, hypnotiserend slepend nummer te zijn, maar ook een zeer actueel en urgent nummer. Black (gekleurd) en Blue (politie)… dat geldt des te meer als je weet dat ‘Black and blue’ ook betekent ook: ‘bont en blauw geslagen’. Dan dringt de wrede realiteit onvermijdelijk tot je door.
Als je de lyrics meeleest, terwijl Luther Black ze met donkere, raspige stem spreek-zingt, krijg je het vanzelf benauwd. Héél benauwd. Verstikkend benauwd. Wat een beklemmende tekst over wat George Floyd en zovele anderen in de States overkomen is. En nog steeds overkomt…

Blue ignorance means death
Zowel de thematiek (discriminatie en onderdrukking) als de klankkleur van Wagner’s stem doen denken aan John Trudell’s fraaie album ‘Jonny Damas and Me’ (1994).

‘Luther Black and the Cold Hard Facts’ new single Black and Blue is a hard-hitting, yet solemn observation of the tense relationship between law enforcement and the African-American community in the U.S. The song is a powerful narrative of an all too familiar tale of prejudice and discrimination, set to a raw blend of ethereal, bluesy guitars and a hypnotic beat.
Singer-songwriter-producer Rick Wagner’s deep-throated, talking blues style brings to mind Steve Earle or Johnny Cash, adding to the intensity of the song.
He is joined by Brandi Thompson of the New York City band Brandi and the Alexanders, whose riveting background vocal adds a soulful touch. “I got chills down my spine from the very first note I heard Brandi sing,” said Wagner. “Her voice is perfect for this song.”
“It’s a heavy song,” says Wagner. “I hope that when people hear it, they’ll come away feeling some empathy for the victims of these senseless, violent crimes. I don’t see it as a condemnation of the police, I see it as a condemnation of hate and bigotry and disregard for human life.”
Black and Blue is the follow-up to Luther Black and the Cold Hard Facts’ most recent release, the critically-acclaimed 2022 album Moment Of Truth.
