Het vierde deel van de Joni Mitchell ‘Archives’ is nu verkrijgbaar. Op vier cd’s en zes vinyl-langspeelplaten hoor je onuitgebrachte studiosessies, alternatieve versies, live-opnamen, zeldzaamheden en een boek van 36 pagina’s met nieuwe foto’s en een diepgaand gesprek tussen Joni en Cameron Crowe. Deze opnamen komen van originele stereotapes, Nagra filmopnamen, multitrack tapes, radio opnamen en cassettebandjes, kortom: van diverse bronnen.
In de tweede helft van de jaren zeventig bleef Joni nieuwe creatieve paden betreden met haar onbevreesde en vloeiende verkenning van jazz. In plaats van hetzelfde pad te volgen, daagde ze haar stijl uit en vond ze hem opnieuw uit met een folkfusie die ongeëvenaard was. Dit innovatieve geluid bereikte een ongeëvenaard sonisch hoogtepunt en kreeg vorm op de met een Gold Award bekroonde ‘Hejira’ (1976), de met een Gold Award bekroonde dubbel LP ‘Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ (1977), haar samenwerking met Charles Mingus getiteld ‘Mingus’ (1979) en het live album ‘Shadows And Light’ (1980). Ze kanaliseert de spanning en opwinding van deze platen en duikt dieper in deze periode op deze boxset.
Deze uitgebreide en essentiële set is verkrijgbaar op 6 cd’s, 4 lp’s (met Joni’s persoonlijke favorieten van de 6 cd set) en digitaal en beslaat een van de meest productieve periodes uit haar legendarische carrière. Het bevat verbluffende live tracks van haar tijd in Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue tijdens haar tournee door de Verenigde Staten in 1975 en 1976, en trekt het gordijn terug met vroege opnamen en alternatieve opnamen van de respectievelijke sessies voor ‘Hejira’, ‘Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ en ‘Mingus’. Het bevat opnames van het Bread & Roses Festival en de anti-nucleaire rally, ten tijde van de 1979 tour en bevat zelfs twee nummers van de tour repetities van dat jaar. En niet te vergeten, het bewijst Joni’s veelzijdigheid en aanpassingsvermogen, met samenwerkingen met veel jazz-giganten als Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter en Pat Metheny.
Deze set beluisteren kost je veel tijd, maar is zéér de moeite en tijd waard. Het is echt genieten om zowel de demo’s als de live-opnamen te beluisteren, die vaak anders klinken dan de versies die je van de eerdergenoemde originele albums kunt kennen.
