There were rumours that this new Deep Purple album would be one of their “heaviest” releases ever, well, let me tell you after, listening to this album several times, that Splat! is NOT an heavy album; it is 100% classic hard rock in the veins of previous Purple albums like Turning To Crime (2021) and Whoosh (2020).
Splat! is Deep Purple’s 24th studio album and it is just classic hard rock stuff, featuring excellent guitar work by Simon McBride, decent vocals by Ian Gillan and recognisable and familiar compositions of one of the godfathers of hard rock.
Songs like Arrogant Boy, Guilt Trippin’ and The Only Horse in Town are musically good rocking tracks, but I truly miss the real hard rocking Deep Purple sparkle, like in the old days of albums like Machinehead, Burn or Perfect Strangers.
Keyboarder Don Airey and guitarist Simon McBride make up the most virtuoso element of the Deep Purple sound in 2026. Furthermore, all songs are rather short, each one even under the five minutes mark, so no hard rocking epics on Splat.
But Deep Purple is still alive and kicking and so the battle rages on, although this new Purple album is only a must have album for die-hard Purple-fans indeed.
