Australiër Pete Hawkes bracht in 1996 zijn eerste album uit. Op het internet wordt gemeld hij sindsdien 1200 (twaalf honderd) albums heeft uitgebracht. Dat zou iedere week één album zijn. Een ander getal dat circuleert is ± 700; nog altijd ± 30 per jaar.
Onderaan deze bespreking staat een ‘klein’ overzicht. Zeker is dat hij héél veel muziek heeft gemaakt, gespeeld en uitgebracht. ‘Veel’ is een terugkomend begrip bij Hawkes. Veel albums, dus, veel verschillende muzikale activiteiten: componeren, instrumenten bespelen, zingen, instructie en héél veel optreden. Maar ook véél muzikale invloeden en stijlen.
Keltische muziek, folk, klassiek, jazz, fusion, blues, kamermuziek, wereldmuziek, rock, gothic rock, ragtime, Delta blues, ambient, singer-songwriter, barokmuziek; en de nodige mengvormen. Die hybride stijlen zijn misschien wel het overheersende kenmerk van zijn muziek. Hij heeft ook letterlijk zijn vleugels flink uitgeslagen. Geboren en gewerkt in Australië, later ook Tasmanië, toen Engeland, Rusland, China en weer terug naar down under. Onrustig, ondernemend, wispelturig en voortdurend wisselend bij alles wat met muziek te maken heeft: Hawkes doet het kennelijk allemaal. Hij is overigens ook wiskundige…
Dat allemaal samen leidt nu tot zijn zoveelste album, met natuurlijk weer een bonte variatie aan en een mix van muzikale ideeën. Soms zijn de composities inderdaad niet meer dan het begin van een min of meer uitgewerkt idee. Soms lijken de nummers daarentegen meer een aanzet tot een kleine, kleurrijke symfonie.
Driekwart van de nummers zijn instrumentale stukken. Prominent aanwezige instrumenten: akoestische en elektrische gitaargitaar, dwarsfluit, viool (het geluid van Jean-Luc Ponty), flugelhorn, trompet en mondharmonica.
Prominent aanwezige muzikale invloeden: sommige nummers doen denken aan Ry Cooder-soundstracks als ’Paris, Texas’, andere aan het geluid en de compositorische aanpak van de avontuurlijke Nederlandse jazzband Kapok; en dan met name het spel van hoornspeler Morris Kliphuis.
De vocale stukken van Hawkes hebben een touch van Leo Kottke. Afgezien van wat verspreidde stukjes metalgitaar, klinkt het album hoofdzakelijk akoestisch en redelijk ingetogen. Jazzy en experimenteel is het bij tijd en wijle zeker. In dat opzicht doen de laatste twee nummers hun titels alle eer aan.
Want hoe klinken een Electric Requiem en een Bad Dream on Good Acid? De muziek past prima bij de benaming ervan. Strijkers, experimenteel, klassiek-achtig, cello en metalgitaar: kortom, muziek die voortdurend verrast en die je ook regelmatig even op het verkeerde been zet. Boeiend om naar te luisteren, als je er van houdt zo nu en dan iets onverwachts te horen.
Net als Franz List en Duke Ellington heeft Steve Hawkes een aandoening waardoor hij geluiden niet alleen hoort, maar ook als kleuren ziet. Waarschijnlijk heet track acht daarom Vivid Dream In Crimson Purple. Bovenstaande tekst is volgens Hawkes eigenlijk overbodig. “Music”, vindt Hawkes, “should not be classified and it should be primarily judged by the emotional impact the music makes to listeners rather than technical prowess”.
Een veelkleurig muzikaal verrassingspakket is ‘The Jazz, Blues & Ragtime Of Pete Hawkes’ in ieder geval…
