Richard Thompson will release his new studio album, Hippies, Thugs and Heroes, on October 16, 2026. The record marks the acclaimed British singer-songwriter and guitarist’s twentieth studio album and will be available on CD, vinyl, and digital formats. Alongside the announcement, Thompson has also unveiled the album’s first single, “Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking.”
According to the official biography, the new songs emerged from unexpected ideas and a cast of intriguing characters that gradually came together around a common theme. The album features stories about old friends, false gurus, musicians, hippies, thugs, and heroes.
With “Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking,” Thompson offers a first glimpse of what listeners can expect from the new album. The song follows a collection of colourful characters trying to find their place in London and is driven by his distinctive guitar work, combining powerful riffs with a fractured, psychedelic solo. Thompson explains that he never forces his guitar solos, preferring instead to let them develop naturally through improvisation.
