Na jarenlang een zolderkamerproject te zijn geweest, verscheen in 2018 ‘Me And You’ en pakte de Dieter van der Westen Band de schijnwerpers met een album vol originele catchy composities, stijlvol ingekleurd door muzikanten met karakter. Liedjes die variëren van verstilde folkparels tot groovende americana. Met ‘Honesty Of The Hopeful’ is er nu de opvolger van het bejubelde debuut.
Dieter van der Westen luisterde als kind al naar de muziek van Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Mark Knopfler en Tom Waits, maar ook naar de wereldse klanken van Khaled, Habib Koite, Idir en Manu Chao. Zijn eerste muzikale stappen zette hij in de Noord-Afrikaanse muziek en met zijn Nederlands-Marokkaanse band Kasba speelde hij over de hele wereld. In Nederland werkte hij samen met artiesten als BLØF, The Lau, Frank Boeijen, Gerard van Maasakkers en het Metropole Orkest.
In de Dieter van der Westen Band wordt de liefde voor Americana en folk gecombineerd met het ritme en de energie van wereldmuziek. Daarnaast wordt de bandsound verrijkt door de rijke ervaring en eigenzinnige karakters van de verschillende bandleden; Dieters broer Eric van der Westen werkte onder andere als bassist bij de Turkse poplegende Sezen Aksu, Martin Fondse en de Braziliaanse topartiest Lenine. Gitarist Aron Raams speelde onder andere bij Gare du Nord en Paul de Leeuw. Drummer Gijs Anders van Straalen is ook te vinden in de band van Wouter Hamel en bij Iris Hond. Joost Abbel schrijft zijn eigen liedjes onder het pseudoniem Johnny, speelt banjo en dobro en is daarnaast ook bandlid van Zorita en Juan Juan. Violiste Mirte de Graaff speelt onder andere bij Last Thursday en Jasper Schalks.
Na het verschijnen van ‘Me and You’ heeft de band zich ontwikkeld en is op muzikaal en persoonlijk vlak hechter geworden. Toen er vanwege de coronacrisis niet live gespeeld kon worden, gebruikten de broers Van der Westen de tijd om nieuwe nummers te schrijven voor hun akoestisch duo-album ‘The Sun Will Rise Again’ (2021), maar ook om nieuwe tracks voor de band te arrangeren en te zoeken naar de juiste sounds bij de verschillende nummers.
‘Honesty Of The Hopeful’ is een ode aan iedereen die er op een eerlijke manier het beste van maakt, vooruitkijkt en de moed niet opgeeft. De melodieën zijn pakkend en ondersteunend aan de songthema’s; soms energiek en enthousiast, soms droevig en meeslepend. Groovende Amerikaanse uptempo folkritmes worden afgewisseld door trage Tom Waits-achtige ballads en folk-/soulsongs. Alles aan elkaar gevlochten met authenticiteit, eerlijkheid en hoop van de makers dat het allemaal weer de goede kant op gaat met de wereld.
Het resultaat is vanaf 14 oktober te beluisteren via cd en streaming en in een live uitvoering met volledige band op zondag 16 oktober in Paradiso in Amsterdam.

moments and time to recover. This song is about such a period when you feel bluesy and hang in
there until a new period can start to grow new love.

Universal understandable lyrics but the perspective is the clue of this song. The chorus is written from
the sun’s perspective, in the verse asking in simple questioning language to people. How difficult life
can be with loneliness, hurt and the need to fight all difficulties in life, don’t forget that tomorrow the
sun will rise again, bringing you the warmth, energy, positivity, and light in order to make you shine
again.
03. Bittersweet 4:43
Autobiographical song for the four Van der Westen boys growing up with their loving parents but also
facing the bitter and difficult periods when their father became heavily manic depressive.
04. Homeward Bound 3:18
Sometimes you feel like having a good old party with some old friends in an environment where you
feel at home and want to go back to.
05. From Dusk till Dawn 4:07
Song about refugees who keep on travelling across the world in search for safety on the run for
politicians that have no clue of the personal suffering they are causing with their warfare.

You have got to keep on focusing on the things you want to achieve in life and feel good about the
ways you are going to achieve them together with your loved ones.
07. Don’t Wait for My Money 3:43
A song with a wink about the fact that women can see a certain bohemian attractiveness in musicians,
but from the moment the financial part of life comes in, the story turns in another direction.
08. When Love Meets Hope 4:02
In the dark and difficult times, it is hard to see beauty, hope and love. It takes courage not to become
cynical and bitter and turn to aggression and defensive behavior, but to stay looking forward and
open to people.

Life is short for all the beautiful things you want to see and experience in life.
10. Still Crazy 2:58
A song about an old love you meet after a very long period, and you feel that the old love is still there
in the back of your mind where the memories have been hiding for all those years.

In the covid period there was no live music and as a musician you miss playing the music, but also the
audience misses the energy of a live gig enjoying the music together.

Song about band life and family. Making music is for most of the time travelling and waiting, and for
the family especially the last thing.
