Rick Fowler is an Athens-based blues guitarist and songwriter. Since the eighties he has been playing in several bands, such as Fortnox, Bombay and Bad Fun. After that he formed the Rick Fowler Band, that is still touring and recording till this day. Fowler’s playing style is smooth and emotional with a raw blues feel. That is to be heard beyond anything on a solo album, Back On My Good Foot, he recorded in 2007 and that is now rereleased by his new record company.
The album’s distinctive character was shaped by an unfortunate accident shortly before recording. The accident happened to be a blessing in disguise because Fowler’s serious arm injury forced him to simplify his playing, more feel than speed.
Back On My Good Foot features a lot of musicians Fowler played with over the years, such as the drummers Gerry Hansen (Randall Bramblett Band) an Bill Berry (ex- R.E.M.), bassist Michael Steele (Randall Bramblett Band and Chuck Leavell), Randall Bramblett himself on keyboards and guitars, who played with Sea Level, Steve Winwood and Gregg Allman, and Hammond organist Tim White, who plays a prominent role on the album.
The album opens with real blues (Infected With The Blues), where Fowler shows off his smooth blues style, and is followed by the slide guitar dominated Skeletons In Your Closet. The slow blues Feel So Much Better is a real burner and in the title song, Back On My Good Foot, Tim White’s Hammond organ steals the show.
As he does with the intro of Preacher. Follows the highlight of the album, the slow blues Walk Softly in which Fowler reveals his full potential. Running From The Truth features his wah-wah guitar and Road To Nowhere is straight blues rock.
Surprising is Hitchhikin’, Rick Fowler absolutely solo on vocals and acoustic guitars in a lingering country blues. The album closes with a 10 minutes long almost psychedelic version of the Savoy Brown-classic Hellbound Train.
Finally this solo album by Rick Fowler has been reissued. Back On My Good Foot was a hidden blues gem from an underrated blues artist.
