On the album cover, perfectly matching the title, Andreas Diehlmann trudges through a night-lit street in pouring rain, his guitar case clutched tightly. The guitarist and singer isn’t quite as alone and isolated as the image might suggest, however, as his trusted bandmates, Jörg Sebald on bass and Martin Gunkel on drums, were by his side for this new album

With ‘Cold Wind On A Dark Black Night,’ the trio delivers another timelessly good-sounding blues-rock album, following “That Old Blues Again” (2024). It’s a driving, shuffling affair, and the German Blues Award-winning musician and his sidemen launch into their set with catchy riffs and a powerful roar.

With “Cold Wind On A Dark Black Night,” the trio delivers another timelessly good-sounding blues-rock album, following ‘That Old Blues Again’ (2024).

Diehlmann masters all facets of blues-rock, delivering a relentless stomper like “Hey Man” with a driving chain-gang rhythm and just as much verve as a beautiful ballad like “Alone.” “Thunderbolt,” “Miss Fortune,” and the title track prove themselves to be perfect blues-rockers, brimming with energy and power, that would inject any AOR radio station with a real punch.

As a guitarist, he’s been a top-tier player in the German blues scene for years. As a singer with a distinctive, throaty, and raspy voice, he’s growing ever stronger, and as a songwriter, he’s already a first-rate talent. With “Cold Wind On A Dark Black Night,” Diehlmann and his band have definitively qualified for the Champions League.

As a guitarist, he’s been a fixture in the top tier of the German blues scene for years. As a singer with a distinctive, throaty, and raspy voice, he’s growing ever stronger, and as a songwriter, he’s already a first-rate artist.
The band plays “The Blues” with a groovy and subtly funky feel, seamlessly intertwining with the sophisticated guitar licks that Diehlmann coaxes from the six strings. Even a song like “Carol”—the second ballad alongside the slow blues “Alone”—adds variety to Diehlmann’s blues-rock spectrum. The guitarist embroiders a carpet of ethereal Hammond B3 sounds with wonderfully soulful licks worthy of Peter Green. The melancholic number immediately lodges itself in the listener’s ears, embraced by incredibly beautiful, refined, and flawless guitar artistry. A song whose marvelous guitar embellishments one could listen to forever.

Around the two ballads, the band goes full throttle with showpiece numbers like “Long Way Home.” Powerful and dynamic, the trio delivers a high-energy performance, and Diehlmann’s impeccably timed solos take the band soaring to new heights. Occasional nods to the pillars of blues-rock do nothing to alter the Andreas Diehlmann Band’s distinctive, mature, passionate, and, above all, brilliantly produced sound.

After being voted Best Band at the German Blues Awards in 2022, Andreas Diehlmann and his band won the award again in 2025. They also received the award for Best Album of 2025 for “That Old Blues Again.” Anyone who has heard “Cold Wind On A Black Dark Night” will know who the favorites are in these categories this year.
