“The Danish Coldplay, only better than the original”, said the leading Danish music publication GAFFA recently in a concert review of The Mukherjee Development
The name “Mukherjee” belongs to the Danish/American/Indian frontman Oscar Mukherjee, who spent his childhood in Northern California, before his family moved to Copenhagen, Denmark. The other members of the band have led impressive careers in Denmark, playing with the likes of Jonah Blacksmith and Peter Sommer & Tiggerne.
Their musical abilities meld together perfectly with Oscar Mukherjee’s quirky lyrics, all sung in native English, creating a unique sound that has fueled The Mukherjee Development’s current rise on the Danish music scene, and which lends them significant international potential.
“Our main goal is to create and encourage a sense of community, fellowship and purpose with our audience. We need songs that bring us together, and in a small way, counteract the polarization and demonization that sadly seems so prevalent in our current world”, says Oscar Mukherjee.
The Mukherjee Development’s live shows are a masterclass in dynamics. Their live performances draw clear links to the music of guitar-based rockers like Neil Young and The War On Drugs, folk/pop artists such as Sheryl Crow and The Cardigans, and modern indie songwriters like Phoebe Bridgers.
The Mukherjee Development is set to release their newest album, “Square Up On A Curve”, in August 2025 in Denmark. The album title is a reference to the act of successfully hitting a curveball in the game of baseball. In a figurative sense; managing to produce a successful outcome in the face of adversity.
Oscar Mukherjee has previously been the band’s sole songwriter, but for this release, the group has taken on a more collective approach, with every member contributing to the songwriting process. The resulting collection of songs contains brit-pop melodies, harmony-drenched folk tunes, and grandiose rock, all bound together by Oscar Mukherjee’s vocals and his stories of love, friendship, and the endless search for identity and belonging in these tumultuous times.
The Mukherjee Development has performed 200 concerts in Scandinavia, achieved airplay on Danish national radio (DR P4, P5, and P6), played live on the nationally broadcast “Good Morning Denmark” (TV2), and played major festivals including NorthSide, Smukfest, and Tønder Festival. Oscar Mukherjees won a “Danish Music Award” and received a Carl Pris nomination as “Composer of the Year” in 2024.
