Sari Schorr Takes to the Piano and Brings a Folk-Blues Classic into Fresh Limelight & Relevance
Lead Belly inspired a generation of musicians, myself included. Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Rory Gallagher are just a few who have been deeply influenced by his music. Kurt Cobain said that Lead Belly was his favorite performer.
I’ve been singing songs made famous by Lead Belly worldwide, in concert halls like the great Carnegie Hall to festival stages such as The Montreux Jazz Festival. It’s a privilege to introduce his music to a whole new audience.
I’ve wanted to record a rendition of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” for many years. But first, I had to find a way to make the song my own. I found the inspiration by accident one day during Covid, seated at my piano. As I began to reharmonize the song, a new perspective emerged. The new chord progression dramatically altered the mood and a new verse shifted the song’s focus onto events that sparked the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2013 which protested police brutality and systematic racism that overwhelmingly affects the Black community.
