Acclaimed Canadian artist Matt Andersen has released his bluesy new track “Wayaheadaya,” off his forthcoming album, ‘The Hammer & The Rose.’
The video for this soulful, live rendition of the song was filmed in a local coffee shop/record store in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The clip captures Andersen’s guttural and inspiring vocals as he belts his message of strength over negativity, accompanied by a band that is completely locked into a loose, yet thick groove with purpose. The performance features Afie Jurvanen (guitar) and Christine Bougie (lap steel) from Bahamas, Chris Kirby (keys), Kyle Cunjak (acoustic bass), and Joshua Van Tassel (drums).
“At its root, the base idea of this song is to not worry about the people who don’t worry about you,” says Andersen. “There are lots of folks who will try to discourage you and hold you back. I feel bad for people who make an effort to be miserable, ‘it’s a sad situation.’ It’s hard for their negativity to bother you when you don’t even pay attention to it. Some people just aren’t worth the attention and effort. It’s best not to look back and carry on, leave the negativity behind.”
‘The Hammer & The Rose’ is the most intimate album in Andersen’s celebrated body of work. Known for his powerful vocals and electrifying live shows, Andersen chose to dial it back on the new album, which focuses more on the nuances and lower register of his remarkable voice.
