Met ‘Through The Open Window 1956–1963 – The Bootleg Series Vol. 18’ duikt Bob Dylan opnieuw diep in zijn eigen archief, en het resultaat voelt als een gesprek met de tijd zelf. Deze reeks, die al sinds 1991 de verborgen kamers van Dylans oeuvre opent, bereikt in deze achttiende editie een opmerkelijke balans tussen historische reconstructie en muzikale openbaring. Waar eerdere delen vaak gericht waren op een specifieke periode of sessie, vangt deze uitgave een moment waarop Dylan tegelijk zoekend, speels en scherp was – een zeldzame combinatie, zelfs binnen zijn veelzijdige canon.
Muzikaal gezien biedt ‘Vol. 18’ een opmerkelijke mix van alternatieve takes, vergeten composities en live-opnames die in hun rauwheid meer vertellen dan gepolijste studioalbums ooit konden. De productiekwaliteit is, zoals we inmiddels van de ‘Bootleg Series’ gewend zijn, zorgvuldig en warm, zonder de oorspronkelijkheid van de opnames te verliezen. Het is alsof je in de control room zit, met Dylan een paar meter verderop, mompelend over akkoordwisselingen terwijl hij een nieuwe melodie probeert te temmen. Natuurlijk is de geluidskwaliteit van deze bijna 70 jaar oude opnamen niet te vergelijken met wat er tegenwoordig mogelijk is in studio’s, maar dit is wat mij betreft absoluut een meerwaarde, het is tientallen jaren geleden opgenomen èn dat hoor je, maar heeft zéker zijn meerwaarde.
Wat vooral opvalt, is de manier waarop dit album licht werpt op Dylans creatieve processen. Onvoltooide nummers tonen een songwriter die ideeën uitprobeert, soms aarzelend, soms brutaal zelfverzekerd. Alternatieve versies van bekende songs leggen subtiele verschuivingen bloot: een ander tempo, een onverwachte frasering, een instrument dat ineens een hoofdrol krijgt. Je hoort hoe liedjes evolueren – niet lineair, maar kronkelend, zoekend, soms zelfs struikelend, en juist daardoor levensecht.
De live-opnames vormen het kloppende hart van de collectie. Dylan staat hier scherp, soms bijna uitdagend, met uitvoeringen die intiem en tegelijkertijd ongrijpbaar blijven. Zijn stem – door de jaren heen veel besproken – draagt hier een expressieve kracht die je meeneemt naar de zaal, waar elke ademhaling deel wordt van de performance. Dit is Dylan als performer, niet alleen als mythische figuur.
Is ‘The Bootleg Series Vol. 18’ essentieel? Voor de toevallige luisteraar misschien niet. Maar voor iedereen die gefascineerd is door Dylans manier van werken, door de manier waarop grote songs ontstaan en veranderen, is dit een schatkist. Het album documenteert niet alleen muziek; het documenteert het creatieve denken van een van de belangrijkste kunstenaars van de 20e en 21e eeuw.
‘The Bootleg Series Vol. 18’ is geen verzameling restmateriaal, maar een zorgvuldig samengesteld portret van een artiest die in voortdurende beweging blijft. Het is een album dat niet alleen beluisterd, maar ook bestudeerd kan worden – en dat, zelfs decennia later, opnieuw laat horen hoe Dylan blijft verrassen. Wat mij betreft een echte aanrader voor iedere Dylan adept!
