Begin Jaren ’70 dook ineens de term “pubrock” op. Het ging hier niet direct om een muziekstroming maar meer een term, die de muziekcultuur uit die tijd aanduidde. Het was een protest tegen de progrock en glamrock uit die tijd. Men wilde weer terug naar de basis en daarom kon je de meeste pubrock bands vooral in kleine zalen en pubs beluisteren. De meest beroemde locaties waren daarbij de Hope and Anchor en de Tally Ho.
Op deze schitterende verzamelaar krijg je een mooi overzicht van de pubrock bands uit die tijd. Qua muziek kom je daarbij van alles tegen van rhythm & blues tot soul en van countryrock tot heavy metal.
De pubrock bleek ook een kweekvijver te zijn van een groot aantal talenten, die later zouden doorbreken. Ik noem bijvoorbeeld Elvis Costello, Joe Strummer, Ian Dury, Mark Knopfler, Paul Young en Huey Lewis.
Er staat ook een aantal bands op de verzamelaar, die nooit doorgebroken zijn en tot de obscuriteit veroordeeld waren.
Bijvoorbeeld de funky countryrock van Eggs Over Easy in Funky But Clean, the Wild Angels met latere Matchbox drummer Bob Burgos in een luchtige versie van the Band’s Time To Kill.
Of de totaal onbekende band Smooth Loser met hun Fortunes achtige pop in You Said It Would Be of de dromerige folkrock van Deep Feeling in Why, Lady, Why. Andere bands zouden ook obscuur gebleven zijn ware het niet dat er bandleden in zaten, die later bekend zouden worden.
Zo is er de band Legend, met Mickey Jupp in hun gelderen, en hun rhythm & blues in Cheque Book, Ducks Deluxe met Martin Belmont en Bob Andrews (beiden later bij Graham Parker & the Rumour), Nick Garvey (later in the Motors) en Sean Tyla.
Martin Stone zou later in Savoy Brown opduiken maar is hier te horen bij Chilli Willi & the Red Hot Peppers, samen met latere Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas, in de countryrock van We Get Along.
Ace zal voor altijd bekend staan als “one hit wonder” door hun hit “How Long”. Hier is de band, met Paul Carrack als zanger te horen in het funky Rock And Roll Runaway.
Voordat Ian Dury doorbrak bij het new wave publiek zat hij samen met latere Blockheads Davey Payne en Chas Jankel in de band Kilburn & the High Roads, waarvan Billy Bentley (Promenades Himself In London) te horen is.
Heel bijzonder is de aanwezig van Elvis Costello in de band Flip City. De hand van Elvis is duidelijk hoorbaar in Imagination (Is A Powerful Deceiver). Ook solo is Elvis Costello te horen met de countrywave van Radio Sweetheart.
Voordat Joe Strummer groot werd met the Clash zat hij in de band the 101’ers, die aanwezig zijn met de klassier Keys To Your Heart. Clover was een Amerikaanse countryrockband met Huey Lewis als zanger. Zij horen ook bij de pubrock doordat zij de begeleidingsband op het debuutalbum van Elvis Costello waren. In hun lome popsong Ain’t Nobody Own Nobody’s Soul is het stemgeluid van Huey Lewis uit duizenden herkenbaar.
Ook zeer herkenbaar is het stemgeluid van Paul Young toen hij nog zanger was van de the Streetband, die je hoort met de swingende soulpop van Loud Music.
Een viertal acts zijn toegevoegd aan deze verzamelaar, hoewel zij te grote namen waren om in een pub te spelen.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band met hun vaudeville rock van Sergeant Fury, Status Quo met het akoestische Nanana, Mott The Hoople met de glamrocker I Wish I Was YOur Mother en Thin Lizzy met Romeo And The Lonely Girl.
Voor de rest is deze box alleen maar gevuld met hoogtepunten.
Ik noem er nog een paar: Brinsley Schwarz met Surrender To The Rhythm, Stretch met de funk klassieker Why DId You Do It, de Ace-achtige pop van Brewers Droop in Where Are You Tonight met een jonge Mark Knopfler als gitarist, de hoekige rhythm & blues van Dr. Feelgood, the Inmates en the Count Bishops, de soul en funk van Moon, Gonzalez en the Jess Roden Band en zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan…..
Deze schitterende cd-box geeft een goed beeld (en vooral geluid) van de pubrock beweging van de 70’s en geeft ook nog eens een prima overzicht van de Britse muziek uit de 70’s.
