Midden jaren ‘60 veroverde de Britse beat de wereld. Het flink met rauwe rhythm & blues geluiden doorspekte Britse beat geluid zorgde ervoor dat er in vrijwel elk land garagerock bandjes opdoken.
Op dit overzichtsalbum krijg je een enorme hoeveelheid van de British Invasion over je heen gestrooid. Tussen de 92 (!) nummers op dit album staat een aantal klassiekers zoals The Pretty Things met hun smerige rhythm & blues geluid in Midnight To Six Man en Get A Buzz, The Small Faces met hun krachtige klassieker What’cha Gonna Do About It, de droompop van The Zombies, de hippie folk van Donovan, de meer popgerichte rhythm & blues van Manfred Mann, de beginperiode van Rod Stewart, de rauwe Animals, de harmony pop van The Hollies, de klassieke bluesrock van The Yardbirds, de machtige Kinks en een vroege opname van Marc Bolan.
Het merendeel van de artiesten en bands op dit album is echter onterecht obscuur gebleven en sommige bands hadden muzikanten, die later in bekendere bands zouden opduiken.
Zo zat bassist John Glascock in The Hi-Numbers, die in de loom rockende rhythm & blues van Heart Of Stone te horen zijn. Glascock zou later in Chicken Shack en Jethro Tull opduiken.
Stones gitarist Ronnie Wood is samen met Kim Ashton (Ashton Gardner & Dyke) te horen bij The Birds in het smerige Next In Line.
Bluesology was een bluesband met o.a. Elton John en Long John Baldry in de gelederen. Elton John is hier als zanger te horen in het lome Come Back Baby.
Steve Howe en Peter Banks, van latere Yes faam, zaten in The Syndicats, die met het onstuimige smerige Crawdaddy Simone te horen zijn.
Stones bassist Bill Wyman was de producer van I Can’t Get Any Joy van The End.
The Iveys zouden later bekend worden als de band Badfinger en hun live uitvoering van Bad Tough Luck Baby klinkt al behoorlijk power pop achtig. Lemmy maakte deel uit van Rev. Black & the Rocking Vickers wiens Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart een bijtende cover krijgt.
Jack Bruce en Ginger Baker zijn te horen in The Graham Bond Organisation met het loom swingende Neighbour Neighbour. Latere Yes gitarist Steve Howe duikt nogmaals op. Ditmaal in The Athenians met de bijtende Don Covay cover Mercy Mercy.
Arthur Brown zou later doorbreken als The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown met de dikke hit ‘Fire’ . Hier is hij met The Diamonds te horen in de krachtige blues You Don’t Know.
Andy Summers van the Police is als lid van Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band te horen in de wilde swinger I’ll Go Crazy. Drummer Mick Fleetwood was lid van The Bo Street Runners wiens Get Out Of My Way een stuwend rhythm & bluesnummer is.
The Roulettes waren oorspronkelijk de backing band van zanger Adam Faith. Russ Ballard maakte deel uit van de band en hun The Long Cigarette is een intieme deiner. The Tomcats was een band waarin de latere Mike Oldfield producer Tom Newman zat. Hun cover van het Stones nummer Get Off Of My Cloud klinkt lekker smerig en gemeen.
Van de totaal obscure bands springen The Eyes met hun rauwe garagerock van I’m Rowed Out, de donkere hoekige garagerock van de Noordierse Spectres in The Facts Of Life en het fel pompende Too Many Things van The Afex er ver bovenuit.
Dit overzichtsalbum laat op een uitstekende wijze horen waarom de wereld veroverd werd door het rauwe beat geluid uit de UK!
