Dit album verscheen oorspronkelijk op 24 september 2002, toen het zevende album voor de band rondom Prog-rock koning Steven Wilson. Nu is het opnieuw verkrijgbaar in een uitgebreide box met vele extra’s. Waarmee het multi talent Wilson toch ongeveer aantoont alles te kunnen. Liedjes schrijven, produceren, het werk van anderen remasteren en zijn eigen albums opnieuw vormgeven in jubileum edities.
Deze verjaardag versie van het album bevat het volgende. Een recente remaster opnieuw gemixt door de meester zelf, overgebleven materiaal uit de opnamesessies die het album niet hebben gehaald, een cd met demo’s en een documentaire over het album. Tevens bevat de blu-ray een 5.1 surround mix. Voor de fans die echt alles willen hebben is dit een echte must have. Completer dan dit kan bijna niet.
Zelfs achttien jaar later is het luisteren naar dit album een spannende reis langs diverse bochten, muzikale wendingen. Duidelijk hoorbaar zijn de verschillende invloeden die de band heeft geabsorbeerd, denk bijvoorbeeld aan Yes en Pink Floyd. Wilson toonde zich vanaf het begin van zijn carrière een muzikant die weet wat hij technisch kan en daardoor niet bang is voor wat ambitie. Het album heeft een continue excentrieke spanning. Snoeiharde momenten worden afgewisseld met epische vergezichten. Opbloeiende en wonderschone melodieën komen voorbij om ten onder te gaan in het vuur van exploderende drums en gitaren.
Er is geen specifieke concept of thema dat op het album gevolg wordt. Toch komt het motief afwezigheid van moraal terug in de teksten.
Op zijn eigen website omschrijft Wilson dit als volgt: “It comes from… It’s related to some of the lyrics. It’s about people on the fringes, on the edges of humanity and society. I have an interest in serial killers, child molesters, and wife beaters… Not in what they did, but in the psychology of why. What caused them to become unhinged and twisted? Why are they unable to empathise? It’s sort of a metaphor – there’s something missing, a black hole, a cancer in their soul. It’s an absence in the soul.”
Een zoektocht door donkere hoeken van de ziel waartegen de muziek in al haar wendingen passend is. Alsof de start van iedere nummer een masker of decorstuk is, heel langzaam krijgen we pas de werkelijkheid te zien.
Een oordeel over ieder album waar Wilson aan meewerkt kan alleen maar positief zijn. Zijn eigen kwaliteitsstempel stuwt het niveau van ieder project omhoog. Dat een heruitgave als dit dan ook zo volledig is, maakt in ieder geval deze recensent zeer gelukkig.
