With ‘Move On Down The Line,’ Michael van Merwyk releases an acoustic solo album that captivates with its directness and clarity. Recorded entirely in one take per song, without overdubs, in a guitar shop specializing in resonator guitars
Various National Reso-Phonic Guitars were used – from vintage instruments dating back to the 1930s to more recent models. Van Merwyk also occasionally played his main guitar, “Heart,” a Continental CS-N from the 1990s.
The transparent and unadulterated sound was achieved using only two microphones from Ear Trumpet Labs, a company highly regarded in the field of acoustic music. This gives the recording an intimate and stripped-down feel, almost as if the concert were taking place in the listener’s living room.
The album consists of half original compositions and half interpretations of classics, among others. Featuring songs by Barbecue Bob, Hank Williams, Charley Patton, Sleepy John Estes, Norman Beaker, and Al Ferrier. The title song, “Move On Down The Line,” is by Jesse Fuller.
