As the acclaimed artist confirms details of her third album, ‘In The Low Light,’ this new chapter begins with the moving song “The Boatman.” Lucy’s latest releases have been in the alt-country and alt-folk genres, whereas this new single marks a return to her more traditional folk sound. The song builds deliberately, growing from intimate verses to a powerful finale with the full band, accompanied by birdsong and the warm, vintage sounds of a Hammond organ.

“With this single, I wanted to write a song that feels like an old folk song. I’m not sure if I succeeded, but I like that it’s a mournful song that still feels a little defiant in the face of death. I had already released an acoustic version of it on my ‘Stabal Sessions’ EP, but I really wanted to record a version with the full band and release it properly.” – Lucy Kitchen

It is an incredibly intense folk (Americana/alt-country/alt-folk) album with moving lyrics and a sophisticated sound arrangement that allows each song to shine in its own unique light. She wrote the album while her husband was dying after a serious illness in October 2022, and so the work explores themes such as loss, grief, memory, and transformation. But amid the sadness, there are flashes of joy, gratitude, and rediscovery.

“Making this album re-built me more than anything else” says Lucy. “From the moment we started recording I just felt this pure excitement to be creating something new with these amazing musicians. I think when you’re recording you embody the music and everything else falls away so for me it just felt like magic. I felt like it brought me back to myself and what I love to do.”

“I can’t wait for everyone to hear the album” she concludes. “We all lose things throughout our lives through death, endings, leavings and I hope people find their own stories within these songs and connect with the idea that we can make beautiful things out of these events, and still move forward with our dreams.”
