Iain Matthews first gained attention as a founding member and vocalist for the innovative Fairport Convention’s first three albums, changing the voice of folk music in his country.
He moved on to create Matthews’ Southern Comfort, exploring his interest in American music. They had a No 1 hit in the UK with Joni Mitchell’s ‘Woodstock’. Never one to stand still for very long Iain moved on during the 1970’s with another group, Plainsong. An ensemble that allowed Iain to blossom as a songwriter and acoustic guitarist – supported by his ex-Fairport mates Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson. Between his own solo recording and various Plainsong line-ups Iain released ten albums to critical acclaim including another well known Top Ten US hit with the single ‘Shake It’.
‘FAKE TAN’ consists of songs from his solo albums, Plainsong, and Matthews Southern Comfort which are all given a refreshing new lease of life and include a new version of Woodstock and a brand new song ‘I Threw My Hat’. They join two previously never recorded songs Reno Nevada from his Fairport days and ‘Dylan’s ‘It Takes A Lot To Laugh’ that Iain regularly included in his live shows.
Matthews’ career has never stood still for more than fifty years he has created and explored new paths and worked with a myriad of talented musicians. This new marriage of musicians who have a different approach to what they do musically – no formula, no agenda, just simple heartfelt expression coupled with Iain’s timeless vocal ability has produced an album that will not disappoint fans old and new.
