Release date: September 25, 2026
For more than two decades, American musician Freddy Trujillo has been a familiar name in roots music, both as bassist for Richmond Fontaine and The Delines and as a solo artist. On September 25, 2026, he released ‘Ave Trujillo’, his fifth solo album and first for El Cortez Records.
Combining Americana, folk, rock and traditional Mexican influences, the album takes an unusual concept as its starting point: birds. Each song is named after a different bird, which becomes a character or metaphor for stories about grief, identity, displacement, environmental change and hope.
The idea initially developed into a project for children, but the songwriting gradually moved towards more complex and darker subjects. Tracks such as Canyon Wren, Common Loon and Mockingbird connect the natural world with human experiences, including Chicano identity and the loss of familiar communities. Vermilion Flycatcher draws on a personal memory following the funeral of Trujillo’s father.
The album also brings together several longtime collaborators. Cory Gray worked alongside Trujillo as producer, engineer and mixer, contributing keyboards and trumpet. Sean Oldham plays drums, Willy Vlautin contributes rhythm guitar and co-wrote Canyon Wren, while Paul Brainard and Luther Russell also feature in the project.
With ‘Ave Trujillo’, Freddy Trujillo combines his longstanding interest in birds with his songwriting and roots music background, bringing together stories about people, nature and belonging.
