Axis: Sova consists of Brett Sova, Jeremy Freeze and Josh Johannpeter. Following the 2023 album Blinded By Oblivion, produced by Ty Segall, the band spent time touring across the United States and Europe while developing new material.

In August 2025, the trio entered Electrical Audio in Chicago with Cooper Crain to record the new songs. Working them out live before recording was a new approach for the band. The sessions focused on greater rhythmic flexibility, allowing the guitars, bass and drums to interact more freely.

Crain produced and recorded the album, with additional recording and mixing completed at Sweat Loge in January 2026. JJ Golden handled the mastering. The result is an album built around phased and fuzzed guitars, progressive hooks, flexible rhythms and tight vocal arrangements.

The opening three tracks, Blow Up, Fictional Autonomy and Fever Days, introduce the album’s energetic approach. Across the nine songs, Axis: Sova explores the tension between internal and external experience while using rock music as a way to process the chaos of the world.

The album’s musical references range from Thin Lizzy and Fugazi to Wire and Mission of Burma, while Axis: Sova’s Chicago background and combination of live and electronic percussion give the record its own framework.
