“Big” Monti Amundson is an American guitar player who plays blues and rock and roll. His style has been compared to that of Stevie Ray Vaughan, and while commercial success has eluded him, he has built a reputation as a live act in the United States and in Europe, first as a power trio called Monti Amundson & The Blubinos, then under his own name.

Amundson and his band played Texas blues in clubs in Eugene, Oregon, from the 1980s on. The band recorded half a dozen records in Portland and Eugene. “Big Monti” was signed to a Dutch label after the second album, Mean Eighteen, was so successful that he relocated to Amsterdam to start a European career.

‘The Mean Eighteen’ had three CD covers over the years. It is the album that got me signed to a record label in Holland. I hadn’t been in Holland for very long when we performed in Maastricht for the first time. In those days I liked opening the show with “Cruel Is Your Name”. I was not prepared for what came next. A couple hundred Dutch people were singing the words right along with me. Talk about your goosebumps. I toured Europe for a year and a half before finally coming home.”

A side project of his is the Sultans of Slide, a group of slide blues guitar players that performed occasional shows starting in 2009, when it consisted of Amundson, Franck “Paris Slim” Goldwasser, Jim Mesi, Bob Shoemaker, and Ben Bonham. In 2011, the Sultans of Slide consisted of Amundson, Henry Cooper and Goldwasser, and released a record, Lightning Strikes, which was promoted with a tour in Europe.

After a hiatus of a couple of years, Monti will be heading to the Netherlands again as one of the headliners of the Utrecht Blues Festival, March 16 2025.
Other artists performing there: JJ Thames, Sean “Mack” McDonald, La Ratte. More names to be announced.
