Sfeervol, ingetogen, authentiek, geen effectbejag. Dat zijn een paar steekwoorden die opkomen bij de beluistering van ‘Let The Light Back In’, het nieuwe album van Luther Black (Rick Wagner) And The Cold Hard Facts. Als goede tweede eigenschap valt op dat het album mooi is opgenomen. Vooral de dynamiek is prima in orde. Zowel harde als zachte stukken klinken prima en het geluid blijft het hele album goed in balans.
Wagner heeft een bijzondere, duidelijk herkenbare zangstem. Het is een stem waarin zowel het timbre van Tom Petty als van Bob Dylan doorklinkt. Misschien moet je er een beetje aan moet wennen, maar als dat eenmaal gebeurd is het geluid van zijn sobere zing-spreekstem een vast luisterbaken.
Dat begint al bij Tom Petty’s Room at the Top. Black laat horen dat hij zeker geen Petty-cloon is en maakt van Room at the Top gewoon een mooie, melodieuze popsong. “It’s about finding inner peace”, zegt Wagner erover.
Can’t Catch the Wind is een intiem geïnstrumenteerde, poëtische overpeinzing over onbereikbare doelen; met een mooi outtro…
Rocker Ain’t Nothing Good About Goodbye krijgt van Black een prettige Petty-feel mee, inclusief catchy refrein, lekkere slide en ‘uitgekleed/gedimd’ middenstuk. Over zijn stem staat in de linernotes: “As the dynamics of the album drift back and forth, the one constant is Wagner’s warm, gravelly voice, which American Songwriter says “hits with a cool sincerity that is a genuine rarity in the modern musical landscape.”
Ook in Lost in the Reye is die tikje hese stem het dragende element. In dit geval stemmig ondersteund door de gitaar van Lance Doss. Op Ghosts on the Boulevard krijgt zijn stem prettige Dylan-achtige trekjes. In deze song gaat Wagner terug naar zijn geboortestad om daar nostalgisch, maar vooral gedesillusioneerd te constateren dat er veel veranderd is. “Now there’s a vape shop where the record store used to be. Nothing aches like a memory.”
Tot mijn aangename verrassing staat de beklemmende single Black and Blue ook op ‘Let The Light Back In’. Goede zaak, wat mij betreft, dat ook mensen geen singles beluisteren, kennis maken met deze geweldige song. Wagner: “It’s a heavy song and might be a little out of place on this album but I thought it was important to include it. It’s a story that happens over and over again. Attitudes about race have unfortunately not moved forward in this country. Titelnummer Let The Light Back In hangt sterk op het ritmisch, bijna funky gezongen, refreintje “Let the light back in”.
Opvallend is Wagner’s cover van het veel gecoverde Otis Redding-nummer That’s How Strong My Love Is. Deze song song staat zodanig gegrift in het collectieve popgeheugen van meeslepende nummers (Otis Redding, Rolling Stones, Popa Chubby en vele anderen), dat de wijzigingen in parafrasering van de zang wennen zijn. Waarschijnlijk komt de uitvoering van Luther Black en zijn band live beter uit de verf.
The Rest of My Days, afkomstig van het album ‘Moment Of Truth’ (2022) is live en sober in de studio opgenomen. Samen met Coming Home is het zonder meer een waardige afsluiter van een fraai album met een zeer eigen klankkleur en een overtuigende muzikale uitstraling.
Wagner is tientallen jaren bassist geweest in een groot aantal bands. Nu vindt hij het tijd om zelf naar voren te stappen. “I’ve always been content to be ‘just the bass player.’ I don’t mind lurking in the background, digging into the groove and getting lost in the music. But one of the side effects of working with so many great songwriters is that little by little that rubs off. Now it’s my turn.”
